Xiaomi Redmi phones have become well known as an affordable smartphone solution packed full of features and provided excellent value for money. With the competition from other brands popping up in the low-cost market this year such as Asus, Oppo and Infixix we wondered how the new Xiaomi Redmi 6A would perform. This article will review whether this phone is still the best buy for consumers on a low budget.
Xiaomi Redmi 6A Design
One of the first features of the design that you will notice is the 18:9 ratio screen and a new feature for such a low-cost price point. The rest of the plastic design is clean but basic featuring a front-facing camera and earpiece. The screen has rounded corners which give it a smooth finish, and the overall feel is pretty slick. The phone is lightweight and fairly slim at just 8.3mm so fits comfortably in the average sized hand.
Xiaomi Redmi 6A Features
The Redmi 6A is available with either 16GB or 32GB of storage, and both models come with 2GB of RAM. The 32GB storage is suitable for most users. But if you want to carry a lot of music and videos, then you can upgrade your storage with a microSD card up to 256GB.
Xiaomi has switched up the processor in this model to the Heilo A series allowing the smartphone to run at up to 2GHz and uses a power saving 12nm process, which gives the phone a long-lasting battery life compared to earlier models.
The 18:9 screen ratio has a resolution of 720×1440 pixels and measures 5.45 inches diagonally. The rear camera has a 13-megapixel sensor while the front camera has a 5-megapixel sensor. Quite impressive for a low budget model considering this is normally a feature lacking in cheaper phones. The image quality is sharp, and the colours are bright perfect for sharing on social media and messaging although the time between shots can be a little long. The video also records up to 1080p, but the phone must be kept still as little shakes can cause the camera to lose focus.
Pros and Cons
For the price point, this phone is a step up from the previous model and the screen size, and the camera is a huge benefit. Several new features of the MIUI operating system are the great customization options, the feature to lock apps and the ability to use face recognition on photos which hasn’t been seen in Xiaomis previous models.
Unfortunately, the new change to the MIUI operating system features a lot of spam advertising. After just a few days of use, this can be overwhelming.
The Redmi 6A is a step up from the 5A model which didn’t have many changes compared to the 4A. The large screen and faster processor are attractive as is the polished design. However, the price has also increased, and the MIUI software leaves something to be desired we are not sure how the phone will stay in line with other competitors making the switch to android.
